Last week I thought to myself, “I will try and catch up on some films that I have missed at the cinema”. I was at the video shop and one film unfortunately caught my attention. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End’ seemed like a good choice as I had somewhat enjoyed the previous two installments. I am a fan of Johnny Depp yet it is unfortunate that his role in these films has become globally commercial beyond belief. By all means his acting in these films does not show one hint of his real talent as an actor and it is perhaps a shame that people will now pigeon hole him into this role alone.
As I started to watch the film I was immediately put off by the third appearance of Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom. They both have about as much acting talent as the wooden ships they sail on. In my opinion, they are awful. Their onscreen persona is practically themselves but chucked into a particular situation. They act it as if they were still Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly instead of detaching themselves into a completely new character like Johnny Depp with Jack Sparrow or Bill Knighey with Davey Jones. It is just lucky that the films have these actors to keep the ‘boat’ afloat. Without Johnny Depp or Bill Knighey these films would surely sink faster than a led weight.
All three films were directed by none other than, Jerry Bruckheimer. Words cannot describe this man’s directing talent simply because I do not believe there is any. I can safely say that all films that I have seen with Jerry Bruckheimer directing I have not enjoyed. Pirates of the Caribbean is simply another installment in Jerry’s career and I think it is unfortunate for Johnny Depp to be associated with it.
