God Grew Tried of Us is a partisan faith shaking, emotional story of war, spiritual growth and the endurance of the human spirit.
During the 1983 Second Sudanese Civil War millions of people were killed, while millions more were forced to flee their country. 25,000 of those were boys ranging in ages from 3 to 13. Traveling by foot for over 1000 miles across the desert, the “Lost Boys of Sudan” reached safety 5 years later at the UN refuge camp in Kenya. Over the miles boys buried boys, as thousands died.
God Grew Tried of Us chronicles the journey of 3 of the 3,600 “Lost Boys”, invited to live in the United States in 2001. The amazing John, Daniel and Panther struggle to adapt while dedicating themselves to improving the fate of those left behind.
This documentary directed by Christopher Quinn and Tom Walker would not have made it to the screen had it not been for actors Catherine Keener, Durmot Mulroney, Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt. Both directors heavily invested in the film making process ran out of resources during editing and upon the suggestion of friends Keener and Mulroney, sent the rough cut to Kidman and Pitt. Kidman joined as narrator and Pitt as one of the executive producers. With their support the film was completed and went on to win both the Grad Jury Prize: Documentary and the Audience Award in the Independent film Competition: Documentary category at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
After viewing this film, you may question yourself as to what will the consequences of our own nation’s involvement in war be, and what might you and I possibly fight for… to cause our children suffer so?
